Yonkers is just north of New York City , bordering the Bronx and sitting on the historic Hudson River. The Lutheran Slovak immigrants settled here in the late 1800's along with Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic Christians. Trinity Square is now home to Holy Trinity Lutheran, Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox, and Most Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church. The congregation was first organized on July 2, 1895 bearing the name “The Slovak Evangelical Augsburg Confession Society of St. John the Baptist in Yonkers , New York .” A legal charter was obtained under the name “Holy Trinity” on March 23, 1902.
In 1903, the congregation purchased the present property and a new house of worship was dedicated on May, 21, 1905. On August 21, 1921, Holy Trinity installed her first full-time resident pastor. Services were conducted in Slovak and English. A new parsonage next door was dedicated on October 22, 1922. As the congregation grew, the need for a larger worship building was necessary. Construction on a new building , began in 1957 and was dedicated on September 21, 1958. The church mortgage was burned on September 23, 1962.

The SELC joined the LCMS as a non-geographical district that stretches from Florida to Canada
From 1902-1904 several Slovak pastors and churches joined together to become the Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Church (SELC). The original group consisted of churches in Hazelton , PA , Wilkes Barre, PA, Raritan , NJ , Cleveland , OH , Streeter, IL, and Yonkers , NY . The SELC continued to grow while cooperating with the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS) in publications and training of pastors. In the 1940's the SELC started the Lutheran Haven in Oviedo , FL. Originally begun for retired Lutheran pastors and teachers, as well as orphans, it has expanded to become a retirement, assisted living, nursing home and day care facility to serve the greater community in 1971.
Holy Trinity is known also for its colorful stained glass windows, especially Christus Rex (Christ the King) as part of the “Christian Life Window” that extends the full height of the front of the building. Although it was started as a Slovak congregation, Holy Trinity now has a variety of races and cultures represented to create a very pleasant diversity of humanity that displays God's creative handiwork.

Our worship is excitedly traditional. That means we are excited to understand our form of worship (liturgy) in the church as a form similar to the ancient and sacred Christian worship of Almighty God. The worship service follows the pattern of the Roman Catholic Mass with changes instituted by Dr. Martin Luther back in the Reformation period in the 1520's. The structure of the liturgy allows us to keep our devotional focus on God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit so we do not get distracted by man-centered and entertainment techniques that are so common in many of today's Christian churches. All the steps of the liturgy are based totally in Holy Scripture as we respond to God's grace, forgiveness, and presence among us in the Divine Worship Service. It is in the worship service that we receive God's gracious gifts through the Word of God and the Sacraments of Baptism and the Lord's Supper (Holy Communion or Eucharist).
